The event is well attended by a nice group of audience (mostly foreigners). Drinks and food was after the talk this time to promote group discussion.

Vice Governor Khun Pichet Panapong explained to the audience that it is the province’s goal to create non-tourism sectors in addition to tourism leg.

Tourism will always be there as the main source of income, but Phuket must create others sources of income in order to grow sustainably. That is a long-term goal. Short-term goal is to promote domestic tourism since the international traveling is still
restricted. The VG also talked about the “Seafood on the Beach” event where food vendors, usually seen on walking streets, set up their shops on the beach instead and sell to locals at very low price. The government subsidized the food cost. The event is rotated from one municipality to another around the island. The province will continue to support this monthly event well into 2021. The province
also hires up to 8,500 local people who lost their jobs to do public works such as cleaning the streets.

VG also shared with us about the medical hub project on 130 rai parcel of land near the checkpoint in Maikhao. Medical center will focus on health and wellness, plastic surgery, anti-aging, retirement, recuperation, and physical therapy. There is also a proposal to allow 14 days quarantine for tourists coming to Thailand on the yacht instead of at the Alternative Local Quarantine (ASQ) hotels. This is good news for yachties. Three (3) years long-stay visa is also up for discussion to serve owners of yacht/super-yacht’s owners and the crew. Special Tourist Visa (STV) program is on going.

A number of Chinese tourists have already arrived Bangkok under STV program. Very soon there will be flights arriving Phuket carrying STV visa holders. On 2-3 November, Thai PM and his cabinet will meet in Phuket. VG said that this is an opportunity for PM to learn first hand about Phuket’s situation under Covid-19 pandemic.

President of Phuket Chamber of Commerce Khun Thanusak Phuengdej shared Phuket’s goal after the pandemic which is summarized in the acronym GEMMST.

G — Gastronomy.  Promote Phuket’s well-known local food. Phuket is on the world map for its food.
E — Education. International universities catered for students who graduate from Phuket’s international schools.
M — Medical. Setup university medical school at Prince of Songkla university campus in Kathu and build medical center in Maikhao
M — Marina. Four (4) are operational and 4 more in the pipeline.  Phuket is very suitable for this industry.
S — Sports and Events. Attract and build facilities for sports, events, and meetings. Reduce low and high season gaps. Also promote co-working space for digital nomads. Work from Phuket.
T — Tuna.  Bring Phuket back to its former glory as tuna processing hub.

Thanks all for engaging in this event so actively.
