Here is a summary of the day:
Team building -- a lot of fun, even for those without musical ears. Look out carolers at the next Christmas party!
Discussion on Why I became a Member of Rotary:
Fundamentally it was to help give back to the community and meet new people. There wasn't a lot about Rotary International except a general understanding that Rotary is a good organization. Some members were asked to join to set up the charter club.
Discussion on Why am I still a member and what does the Club mean to me:
Most common reason why members stay in this Club:
Fundamentally this is where Rotary really came into it.
- After learning more about Rotary and what it does on a local and global level members want to be part of that.
- Also, the fellowship with good people and friendships built up in the club.
We all put forward our own elevator speeches.
There are too many to gather here but it is important that every member have their own, quick,
way of introducing Rotary to people who are unaware of Rotary and our club. Some of the vocabulary used included:
- Global / World wide, 1.2 Million members worldwide, Business leaders / Professionals,100% funds raised by our club goes to the need, Polio eradication, Friendship / fellowship, Helping others, Alternative to giving to the temple, well respected NGO, respect in community, scholarships, Water Safety Project, Invite to the meeting
Discussion about Membership started with outlining what would a perfect member be and where therefore could we look for them. The vocabulary to define a "perfect" member: Ying & Yang
(ask Johan), Charitable, Committed, Involved, Honest, Friendly, Open minded, Unselfish,Team player, Humble, Enough money and time, Smart, 35 and above, English speaking, Thai speaking, Working. While few people have all these traits, keep them in mind when considering introducing the RCoPB to a potential member.
Places to find potential members:
- Other organizations: Business Associates, Sundowners, AMCHAM, SKAL, Phuket Hotel Association
- Hospital
- Advertising at Immigration and other places expats visit
- Walk in, sign by the hotel
- Projects like a Beach clean up and inviting public to join
- Organize a Network event open to the public with interesting guest speakers
- Own Club meetings
Ideas to make meetings being more engaging:
- Every Meeting: 10 Minutes about Rotary, 10 Minutes about specific Club projects
- Some Meetings:Once a month a good speaker, Guest Speaker organized alternatively by each member
How to get Members more engaged:
- Hands on Projects
- Kids day out
- Family day
- BBQ at members home
Service above Self
- Weekly meeting organized by another member each week (in charge of the meeting) Scheduled and overseen by President (Secretary)
- FUN
- Joint Meeting with other Rotary Clubs ie. Sports Day
- Trophy’s to be shown in special cabinets (OB organizing)
- Flags of visiting Rotarians can be shown as PP during the start of meeting (need a volunteer to do the Power Point)
- Working on a Rotary Calendar for the remainder of this Rotary year and the next Rotary Year for the month of July 2019 (Proposal to discuss with PE)
Discussion on Projects:
There were a lot of project ideas. Fundamentally the members very much want more hands on projects - at least 2 per year.
- A kids day out / sports day with, Old Folks,
- School for kids with special needs, PSV, Life Home and Child Watch, Baanya School incl. repairs and repainting.
- Certainly continue the safe water project.
- Work with the schools for a kids day out.
Other ideas
- include traffic education / road safety / helmets, Marine Safety training, School Kho Sirae (water system build by RCoPB) sewage clean up, Single use Plastic project. Collection and re-use of Plastic for construction (machine),- Prosthetic 3D printer to print prosthetics for kids and adults - partner with hospitals/NGO, copying damn project from Kho-Samui-Phang Naan RC. Build mini-dam’s to hold water back and limit erosion on mountain sides,
Increase RCoPB awareness:
- Sign / Banner
- Benches at the Beach area
- An Awning at the Immigration office Patong
- Link up with Sports events, like the Phuket Open
- PR Booth to use at Events
A date was set for a Family Day out at around THB 500 (or little more) on Saturday 31st of August
2019 on Marks Boat (max 30 persons).
In addition:
- Weekly meeting the whole year around (registration by every Monday latest 16,00) Majority voted yes
- To award a life time Honorary Membership of PP. Denis Carpenter -- Unanimous approval
- Overall it was a great day and the members enjoyed a lovely dinner at the hotel.
- Special thanks to David, Walter, Sam, and Jaspal for organizing the event!
Photos of the above event BBQ at the conclusion of the event are shown later in this Bulletin.

Dear Members,
PP, Emeritus member, Arnaud, requested the Board to accept his resignation as PE at Tuesday's
board meeting due to health reasons. The Board reluctantly agreed.
After the meeting, the PP committee met and requested Jonathan to step up as PE for the 2019/20 Rotary year. He accepted. In addition, PP Best has agreed to be the VP for the same year.
It was really sad to have to accept Arnaud's resignation but at the same time, it was great to see our members step up to support the club. We continue to need this active engagement in the club and look forward to seeing members who aren't actively on a committee put themselves forward to support the 2019/20 Board.
Thank you Arnaud, Jonathan and Best!
