As the organizer of tonight, Rtn Larry Demco was tied up with something else,   improvisation was the key for a successful night.

PP Sam stepped in as SAA and asked President Jonathan to open the   meeting at sharp  20:00.

Walter introduced Greg Holman and Deb Coleman as his   guests. They live both in Kamala and Deb showed some   interest in Rotary. Who knows, with a little help from all of   us and the membership chair we might get some new   candidates.

Another guest, the speaker of tonight, former Member Alastair, was cordially welcomed.

After a short update by the club officers, who hardly had to report something, we moved   to the introduction of the guest speaker.

Alastair, who was a member of our club, didn’t have to be introduced much. Alastair, a former political journalist, character painter, self- publisher, and …… started some time   ago to write a book.

Mythical Tui birds, mystical old Maori men, missiles from America, a dastardly Australian   prime minister and an even worse Proudean one, a hero raised by gorillas, gang warfare,   a mad scientist, nuclear power and energy, brave and noble sheep (what else), a crazy   rugby match (it had to be), gumboot throwing, the Proudean drug and sexual cultures of   man and beast, and a myriad of Machiavellian political mischief-making in an antipodean   country whose South Island is wracked by climate change.
Alastair’s speech tonight was more how it is to prepare writing a book rather than   reading out of the book. Making a script and especially about the toughest job for a first   time writer, publishing a book which turned out it was the much bigger challenge than   writing it. Anyone interested can find out more about Alastair’s first novel.                                                           here: http://www.alastaircarthew.com/

Membership and New Club Development Month

August is Membership and New Club Development Month. This is the perfect time to celebrate your club’s members and consider the many options available for strengthening your membership. The following ideas can get you started:

Show your Rotary pride by adding a Proud Member frame to your profile picture on Facebook.

Watch RI President Mark Daniel Maloney speak about growing Rotary and share his short membership video at your next club or district meeting.

Welcome new members to your club with Rotary Basics. The online course covers all things Rotary in an interactive, multimedia format. The course was designed for new members, but it’s also a good refresher for long-time members who want to test their Rotary knowledge.

Encourage local businesses, nonprofits, and government groups to get involved in Rotary by offering corporate memberships. Learn more about this innovative membership model in the Guide to Corporate Membership.

Did you know you can start a satellite club with as few as eight members? The Guide to Satellite Clubs explains what a satellite club is, how it can benefit your community, and steps for starting one.

Passport clubs encourage their members to visit other clubs and participate in their activities as a way to get  fresh ideas. Learn more about this club model in the new Guide to Passport Clubs

The newly updated Club Flexibility page has great ideas and tips for how your club can stay relevant to current and future members.

Finally, Rotary has a series of membership courses available in the Learning Center — from managing Online Membership Leads to Building a Diverse Club. Each course includes self-guided learning modules that let you explore real-life scenarios you might experience in your club. All membership courses are highlighted in purple.

Blood Clots/Stroke

They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

Stroke -- Remember the first three letters: S. T. R.

Stroke Identification

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall -- she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital -- (at 6:00 pm, Ingrid passed away). She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die, they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It only takes a minute to read the signs...

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke within 3 hours, he can completely reverse the effects of a stroke. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

Recognizing a Stroke

Remember the 3 Steps: S. T. R. Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

SAsk the individual to SMILE.
T: Ask the person to TALK and speak a simple sentence coherently. (i.e., "It is sunny out today.")
R: Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has any trouble with ANY one of these tasks, call an emergency number immediately, and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -- Stick Out Your Tongue

Ask the person to stick out their tongue. If the tongue is "crooked," or if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist says if everyone who receives this information sends it to 10 people, you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
