Dear Rotarians and Friends of Rotary,
This was a difficult year, but because we are a strong club we still had many successes.
Let's start with projects:
Larry Amsden Swim Safe programme, our first. We arranged for 94 kids from a Patong school to learn to swim and water safety. 90 of those could not swim prior to this 10-week course, all could afterwards. A life-saving and life-changing project for these kids and their friends.
We joined the other Rotary Clubs in Phuket to support the annual Vegetarian festival by providing plates to a Temple so they can serve food to the poor.
We supported the Andaman club in a dental clinic at the BanYa school which lead to discovering a little girl who needed a simple medical procedure to allow her to talk normally. At the meeting this was discussed, the money was raised and within the month she was able to talk normally for the first time in her life.
We helped kids at the Temple school in Patong by providing them plates on which to eat.
With the Phuket Club and the Andaman club, we supported a road safety day where kids of all ages learned basic road safety and the importance of wearing helmets. We provided large and small helmets to all the kids and their teachers. They all road with the mayor in a procession to Cape Promthep.
We provided over 100 scholarships to students and 6 graduate scholarships to students studying environmental science. An ongoing project.
We started year 2 of the swimming programme.
We should be proud of these projects!
In fellowship, it was a sad year for us.
Losing both PP Larry Amsden and my husband VP Gary Eidsvik-Moody.
But we had many well-attended dinners across the island. We had a great day at Karon Sea & Sand discussing the future of the club and how to keep improving its service to the community and its members. We also learned how to play an Indonesian instrument that I can't recall the name of, but it was fun! It is sad to lose Rotarian Nils to e-clubs this year. I am sure he will continue to serve with vigour!
PP OB and PP David organized a brilliant fundraising weekend adding over THB 500,000 to our charity account. Excellent fundraising! PP Denis produced our 580th newsletter -- great work!
As planned, it has been an introspective year. We still have to work on the community assessment to help guide our project planning.
I leave Jonathan with a strong board and big ideas and wish him all success!
PE Jonathon - only for two more days & then President.
President's Message
A new Rotary year begins; I am honored to serve as the 19th President of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach.
RI President Mark Daniel Maloney, from the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA, has chosen the RI theme for 2019-2020 “Rotary Connects the World”. Rotary is built on connection. Through its distinct mission and structure, Rotary International provides a way to connect to our communities, to network professionally and to build strong and lasting relationships.
As you all know I have taken over the position as President on a very short notice just a few weeks ago and therefore the preparation time for this year was short.
The board and I shall work hard to come up with a proper plan and goals on how to make this year another successful year of this Rotary Club.
I have to express my sincere thanks to the previous board members, especially IPP Karen. I learned a lot from her last year during board meetings and I’m happy she is serving on the board this year too as the IPP.
Only together we can be strong and I, therefore, count on every one of you. Having a club with less than 20 members whereas 2 of the members a permanently living far away from Phuket, the workload needs to be shared among all of us.
That is why our biggest goal for this, and maybe the next 2-3 years too, is to become attractive for new active members. Only if we grow we will have a chance to survive.
The Rotary Club of Patong Beach is a very active club. Through fundraising efforts and member participation we provide the needed support for our local projects; especially our children focused projects, like the Learn to Swim Project, scholarships, as well as many other local projects we shall prepare as discussed in Karon on May 18th
As President, I am looking forward this year to continue our community service and to reinforce to the people of Phuket that Rotary cares.
The members of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach thank the outgoing President Karen Eidsvik-Moody for her leadership this past Rotary year July 2018 to June 2019.
President Karen was always present and spent countless hours to keep this Rotary club a vibrant one. Together with her husband Gary Eidsvik-Moody, who was serving as President-Elect and sadly passed away on January 10th. Together they were a perfect team and despite the huge loss Pres. Karen completed her Rotary work in a fantastic way.
During her year we switched back from a lunch meeting to dinner meetings.
Under her leadership, we conducted several projects successfully and she hands over a healthy club to incoming President Jonathan Russell.
President Karen will always be remembered as the first female President of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach. Thank you, President Karen, for a great Rotary year!

Rotary’s new strategic plan is underpinned by four key priorities – to increase our impact, expand our reach, enhance participant engagement, and increase our ability to adapt. The emergence of new club models is evidence that Rotary clubs and districts are working actively to advance these priorities.
These new club models represent an opportunity to connect with a more diverse group of individuals – particularly those who are unable or unwilling to join our traditional clubs. While new club models have been emerging for some time, the 2016 Council on Legislation decision to promote flexibility and innovation has arguably accelerated their development.
At the present time, it’s possible to recognize at least seven different types of clubs:
Traditional clubs – at the heart of Rotary: a group of professionals and aspiring leaders who meet regularly for service, connections and personal growth
Satellite clubs – sponsored by a traditional club, but with their own meetings, projects, bylaws and board
Passport clubs – that allow members to attend other Rotary club meetings and service projects, so long as they attend a specified number of meetings in their own club
Corporate clubs – whose members are employed by the same employer, but who have different roles in their workplace
Cause-based clubs – whose members share a passion for a particular cause and whose service projects and activities center around that cause, and
Rotaract clubs – sponsored by Rotary clubs, whose members are aged between 18 and 30 and who meet together for service, friendship, and connections
Amid this landscape there are also hybrids of these types – adding further to the diversity of Rotary, and there can be little doubt that new club models will continue to emerge – including the possibility of a model of participation which is not club-based.
Development of new club models and new ways to engage with Rotary is a healthy sign – indeed some would say a critical ingredient – of our ongoing sustainability and success.
Our challenge is to continue to evolve – to meet the needs of our members and our communities and to ensure Rotary stays relevant, innovative, and engaging long into the future.
A man and his wife walked into a dentist's office.
The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry.
I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anaesthetic, I don't have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it!
We have a 10:00am tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already...I don't have time to wait for the anaesthetic to work!”
