Weekly Meeting

The July 14th speaker will be an international legal luminary, Judge René Blattmann.

Judge Blattmann will be discussing the importance of the International Criminal Court and sharing anecdotes from his experience as one of the judges presiding over the war crimes trial of Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga.

Judge Blattmann is a retired Bolivian judge, lawyer and law professor who was a judge of the International Criminal Court. Prior to his appointment to the ICC, Judge Blattmann served at the UN's Mission of Verification of Peace Agreements as chief of the Human Rights and Justice division in Guatemala, and before that as Bolivia's Minister for Justice and Human Rights. 

Judge Blattmann was elected to the ICC from the Latin American and Caribbean group of States and was a member of List B, the list of judges with experience in the field of human rights law and international law. He was elected in 2003 and remained in office through the completion of the trial of Thomas Lubanga in 2012.

Among other international awards and distinctions, he was awarded:

  • Dr. Honoris Causa of Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany
  • Dr. Honoris Causa of University Basel, Switzerland
  • Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz)
  • Latin American Prize of Human Rights, and others.

He now lives in Phuket along with his son, Pablo, who is a chef and owner of DeDos Restaurant and DeDos LeLounge.
